Few garage door faults unsettle people like this one. You close the door, go inside, and an hour later it's standing open. Or you wake to an open garage and no explanation. Before anyone reaches for a supernatural theory: this is a known, diagnosable electrical fault family, and it follows patterns we see every month across Perth.
First: it's not random
An opener only moves when its logic board receives a signal — from a remote, the wall control, a keypad, an app, or (in one special case) its own faulty electronics. 'Opening by itself' really means 'receiving a signal you didn't intend'. Find the signal's source and you've found the fault. That's the entire diagnostic game.
One impostor to rule out first
A door that closes fully, touches the floor, then immediately reopens is NOT opening by itself — that's the opener's safety reverse misreading the floor contact as an obstruction, usually a travel-limit setting that's drifted. The six usual causes
- A stuck or shorting button — on a remote rattling around a car console or a drawer, or on the wall control itself. Far and away the most common cause, and the cheapest.
- An accidental press — a remote in a pocket, a handbag, or a child's reach. Embarrassingly frequent, quickly ruled out.
- A shared code — older dip-switch openers from the 80s and 90s had a small pool of codes, so a neighbour's remote can genuinely operate your door. Modern rolling-code openers made this obsolete.
- Radio interference — a new LED globe in the opener's own light socket, a solar inverter, or other nearby electronics can, in rare cases, trigger or jam the receiver.
- Moisture in the wiring — a corroded wall-button cable or water in a junction briefly closes the circuit, exactly as if someone pressed the button. Shows up after rain or sprinkler sessions.
- A failing logic board — age, heat and power surges eventually make an opener's electronics fire phantom signals. The terminal diagnosis, and the one that ends in a repair or replacement decision.
How to narrow it down yourself
You can do genuinely useful detective work here without touching anything mechanical:
The elimination sequence
- Take the batteries out of every remote — car, house, spares — and unhook any keypad. If the phantom stops over the next day or two, one of those transmitters was your culprit; reintroduce them one at a time.
- Check the wall control: does the door move if you wiggle its button or cable? Any corrosion or moisture on it?
- Note the timing — after rain points to moisture; after a new appliance, globe or inverter points to interference; no pattern at all leans toward the board.
- Check the app history if your opener is WiFi-connected — smart openers log every command, and the log will show whether a signal was actually received.
- Ask how old the opener is: dip-switch-era units are shared-code suspects and overdue for retirement regardless.
What not to do
Don't open the motor housing to inspect the board — capacitors hold charge with the power lead out — and don't leave a phantom-opening door trusted overnight. Use the manual lock or disconnect the opener at the power point until the cause is found.
The security angle — take it seriously
A door that opens unpredictably is a home that unlocks unpredictably — while you're at work, or asleep, or away for a weekend. Until it's diagnosed, treat it accordingly: switch the opener off at the wall when you're not using it, engage the door's manual slide lock if it has one, and don't leave the garage-to-house door unlocked on the assumption the big door is down. When it's a technician's job
- The remotes are eliminated and the door still moves on its own
- The wall control or its wiring shows corrosion, damage or moisture
- The opener predates rolling-code security (roughly pre-2000s)
- Phantom operation continues with every transmitter disconnected — the classic board signature
- You want the receiver's memory wiped and every transmitter re-paired properly
