Why springs hold so much force

It looks like ordinary bolted hardware, but with the door closed it's carrying full spring tension through the cable. Unbolting it releases everything at once. Never undo a bottom bracket with the springs wound.

  • Test the balance: pull the manual release with the door down, lift the door to waist height and let go — it should hold roughly in place

  • Lubricate hinges, rollers and the torsion shaft bearings twice a year with a garage-door-specific lubricant (never grease the tracks)
  • Test the opener's auto-reverse monthly with a solid object (like a piece of timber) under the closing door
  • Keep tracks clear of debris, and keep fingers away from panel joints while the door moves

Never DIY — call a technician

  • Winding, unwinding, adjusting or replacing any spring
  • Loosening set screws on winding cones or cable drums
  • Unbolting bottom brackets or anything a lift cable anchors to
  • Replacing, re-seating or re-tensioning lift cables
  • Removing an extension spring or its containment cable
  • Working under a raised door without it clamped and supported

If the step involves releasing, adding or redirecting tension — on a spring, cable, drum or bracket — it's a technician's job. Everything on the safe list above involves none.

If a spring has already broken

A single loud bang from the garage followed by a door that won't lift is the classic broken spring. The door is now dead weight — 80 kg or more with nothing counterbalancing it.

  1. Stop using the opener. Every attempt drags the door's full weight through the motor, cables and brackets and grows the repair bill.
  2. Don't pull the manual release while the door is up — with a broken spring, nothing is holding the door, and it can fall.
