Common Garage Door Problems and What Fixes Them

Match the symptom to its cause, see which checks are safe to do yourself, and know when the tools need to stay in the van until a technician arrives.

Most garage door problems announce themselves the same few ways. A door that will not open is usually a snapped spring, a dead opener or a remote that has lost its code; one that will not close is nearly always the safety beams or the force setting. A door that stops halfway, sits crooked in its tracks or has started to grind, squeal or bang points at rollers, cables or a spring on its way out. Each guide below explains the cause, the checks that are safe to do (remotes, resets, beam alignment, the manual release) and the ones that are not: a broken spring or cable is under tension and stays a technician's job. When it is time to call, the garage door repairs page sets out how a visit runs and the repair cost guide gives the price band incl. GST.
